The Group provides strategic direction and support to the four clusters, assisting them in realising their strategies and meeting their business objectives. The Group Office is responsible for governance and for the Group’s centralised functions, which include: Finance, Actuarial and Risk Management, Strategy, Human Resources, Market Development and Brand Services.

 

What will you do?

This role resides in the Group Office, in the Strategy and Impact Office and reports to the Managers: Group Strategy and Senior Managers: Group Strategy.  The role can be based in either Cape Town or Johannesburg.

 

The Associate Manager: Group Strategy will be responsible for identifying new opportunities for long term strategic value creation, supporting the development of the Group long-term strategy and ensuring successful implementation of certain strategic initiatives across the group. 

 

You’ll work in a small team of dynamic, driven strategy professionals and regularly interact with senior Sanlam executives across the group.  While usually reporting to a Senior Manager: Group Strategy or Manager: Group Strategy, you’ll typically have ownership of your own modules which you’re expected to structure and drive on your own. 

 

You will work on challenging, enriching activities across the group, increasing your understanding of complex business problems from diverse perspectives and helping you develop a range of new skills. 

 

 

What will make you successful in this role?
  • Support Senior Managers and Managers in the development of long-term strategic plans and objectives through the identification of strategic issues and opportunities that could influence Sanlam’s growth and profitability;
  • Support cluster executives, develop cluster strategic initiatives to execute on the Group strategic vision
  • Drive insightful analyses of the market and transaction trends as well as identify and explore any adjacencies to the business in order to ascertain potential risks and opportunities;
  • Perform analysis on strategic initiatives to determine their prioritization;
  • Working across the group, ensure successful development and implementation of certain cluster strategic initiatives by:
    • Analysing and challenging initiative roadmaps (incl. KPIs, risks, milestones and interdependencies);
    • Acting as a sounding-board to certain initiative owners for key decisions in roadmapping and implementation;
    • Share experience and best practices gained with initiative owners;
    • Regularly monitor performance measures put in place to determine the effectiveness of certain implemented initiatives;
  • Ensure all key strategic initiatives consistently reflect the Group’s goals and interests 
  • Support Senior Managers and Managers’ work on other strategic initiatives;
  • Regularly communicate the status of certain strategic initiatives to Senior Managers;
  • Collaborate with Senior Managers on facilitation of quarterly business reviews on cluster strategic performance; 
  • Support Senior Managers perform annual strategic review to evaluate overall performance against strategic targets;
  • Other duties may be assigned
Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge
  • University degree with 5 to 7 years relevant industry experience or strategy consulting equivalent
  • An MBA will be to your advantage
  • CA (SA), actuarial or engineering background may help you with analytical part of the role
  • Strong business acumen and understanding of the environment in which Sanlam operates
  • Strategy development experience, preferably working as part of a strategy team in a fast-paced and dynamic business environment
  • Good numerical & analytical skills
  • Understanding of, or experience in, financial services
  • Understanding of market research and data analysis
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Able to work effectively in a team
