What will you do?

Santam’s Intermediated Distribution, has a position available for a Quality Assurance and Compliance Support Specialist who will be based in Auckland Park.


The role encompasses two disciplines, namely Quality Assurance and Compliance.  The Role spans Brokers Services and Outsourced Business (“Intermediated Business”).

    • Provide proactive regulatory and compliance advice, support to, and manage regulatory change within Intermediated Business.
    • Ensure that products, business solutions and services within Intermediated Business are provided within the existing regulatory framework and in an efficient and value-adding manner.
    • Be accountable to Santam’s Risk Control functions (Compliance, Legal, IT Security and Enterprise Risk Management) regarding regulatory compliance and risk practices specifically within Intermediated Business.
    • Provide an independent assurance opinion on the design and operating effectiveness of the controls, compliance with policies and adherence to procedures by performing Quality Assurance reviews.
    • Oversight and implementation of risk management responsibilities across Intermediated Business in collaboration with Santam’s Enterprise Risk Management Department.

This role will report the Head: Intermediated Business Operations.

What will make you successful in this role?

Compliance (including Risk Management)

    • Assist, provide guidance and manage the implementation of regulatory, compliance and internal policy requirements internally and externally with business partners.
    • Assist with resolving of non-compliance and risk issues, as identified by Santam’s Compliance and/or other Risk Departments or management, and ensuring the responsible business unit implements the appropriate controls, process or procedures.
    • Develop corrective action for resolution of existing regulatory, risk and compliance issues and provide general guidance to business and staff.
    • Work closely with Santam’s Legal and Compliance teams in embedding any new and amended compliance regulations within Intermediated Business, applying effective implementation strategies.
    • Ensure monitoring mechanisms are effective.
    • Assist with ad hoc investigations and projects which could impact the regulatory risk for the Intermediated Business;
    • Contribute to the understanding of Regulatory developments and their impact on business through attending recommended meetings with Santam’s Compliance, Internal Audit, IT Security and Enterprise Risk Management.
    • Identify key areas where training is required and facilitate the training or arrange for a training intervention in consultation with Santam’s Compliance and Learning & Development Departments.
    • Proactively maintain and build relationships with all stakeholders
    • Report to all stakeholders on compliance and risk management.
    • Create awareness of compliance through regular communications and foster a culture of compliance and risk management within in the Intermediated Business environment which is aligned with Santam’s Compliance Control function.
    • Keep up to date with regulatory developments in the financial services industry with particular emphasis on changes affecting Intermediated Business.
    • Drive and maintain the Intermediated Business Risk Management Register.
Quality Assurance

Quality Assurance Reviews

  • Plan and execute audit assignments in line with the Quality Assurance methodology in accordance with the assurance plan and relevant policies, procedures and quality standards.
  • Apply the internal audit methodology and quality standards with minimum supervision.
  • Develop and maintain audit procedures and update changes accordingly.
  • Report on full reviews and distribute final audit report to various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Track the remediation of the recommended action plans to ensure implemented in the business units.
  • File all audit working papers, documents and reports in the designated files.
  • Interact with Santam’s Internal Audit, Compliance and Risk Functions where Combined Assurance is required.
  • Assist the QA Manager with completion of the annual QA Review plan.
  • Contribute towards the risk assessment and risk management for the business units.
  • Attend the designated forums within business and Quality Assurance Department to drive Quality Assurance.
  • Proactively maintain and build relationships with all stakeholders.
    • Matric, Internal Auditing Diploma or relevant Degree.
    • At least 5 years’ experience in insurance (regulatory compliance, underwriting, corporate governance).
    • Exposure to Internal Audit and/or Quality Assurance environment.
    • Fully computer literate (MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
    • Valid driver’s licence.
    • Ability to conduct research into regulatory compliance issues.
    • Ability to draft reports and deliver on regulatory compliance and quality assurance reviews.
    • Broad knowledge of the legislation affecting the financial services industry, in particular the short-term insurance industry.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills.
    • Proven business acumen at a senior level.
    • Excellent communication, presentation and negotiation skills.
    • Creative thought, innovation, independence with an ability to work as a team member.
    • Solutions orientation rather than technical rule based approach.
    • Interpretive abilities specifically with regard to legislation and regulation.
    • Extensive experience and knowledge of insurance related legislation and regulation.
