Who are we?

Sanlam Corporate Cluster comprises of the two existing businesses – Sanlam Employee Benefits (SEB) and Sanlam Health Management (SHM) and the soon to be established Sanlam Corporate Solutions. These businesses enhance our corporate business offering through providing integrated solutions for corporate clients both in South Africa and across the African continent by providing tailored solutions to targeted corporates.  SEB CORE specializes in retirement fund administration to institutional retirement funds spread over a number of industries and services from large single employer run stand-alone funds to multi-employer umbrella funds. This business unit is also responsible for ongoing client servicing ranging from board of Trustees, Employers, Intermediaries and Employees. It is also responsible for the IT deliverables and digital strategy for Sanlam Employee Benefits. 

What will you do?

•    Provide leadership to the SC legal team and ensure that the team functions effectively;
•    Allocate requests for legal opinions to a legal adviser and consult with the adviser where required;
•    Provide accurate and timely legal advice on matters relating mainly to pensions law and insurance law which affects SC;
•    Interpret existing legislation and regulatory instruments (“legislation”) and the impact thereof on SC and its clients;
•    In conjunction with SC, assist in providing comments via industry bodies on draft or proposed new/amended legislation with a view to ensure, as far as possible, that such legislation will be unambiguous and fair towards SC and our clients;
•    Inform SC of any new/amended legislation that may affect the business and provide guidance on the implications thereof for, and actions to be taken by, the business;
•    Provide regular reports to SC on regulatory developments in the employee benefits industry;
•    Draft or vet non-standard contracts where SC is involved, and ensure that the terms thereof are reasonable and that SC’s interests are duly protected;
•    Assist with analysing and resolution of disputes, and manage litigation, where SC is involved;
•    Represent SC at stakeholder engagements or industry bodies, if required.    

What will make you successful in this role?

Qualifications 
•    LLB or higher degree
•    Qualification as an attorney will be an advantage 

Experience & Knowledge: 
•    At least 8-10 years’ experience in pensions law and insurance law (experience in the law relating to group life insurance will be an advantage);
•    Sound knowledge of South African law;
•    In-depth knowledge of Pension Funds Act, provisions of Income Tax Act relating to retirement funds and relevant insurance legislation, as well as a sound knowledge of other laws affecting retirement fund administrators, retirement funds, financial services providers and insurers providing group life insurance.

Qualification and Experience
Registered Attorney with 8 to 10 years related experience.
